ScottishPower Renewables to Sponsor British Pipe Band Championships 2012

02/04/2012

ScottishPower Renewables (SPR), the UK’s leading onshore windfarm developer, has announced it will continue its sponsorship of the British Pipe Band Championships for a second successive year.

The 2012 Championships will take place on Saturday 30th June in Annan. Up to 130 pipe bands, comprising 3000 pipers are expected to compete this year. Organisers are also hoping that as many as 5000 spectators will turn-up to be part of the musical celebration.

The British Championships is one of the world’s top gatherings with competitors from all over the UK taking part, including the very successful ScottishPower Pipe Band.

SPR’s continued support has allowed organisers to freeze ticket prices at last year’s rates. Tickets go on sale from Wednesday 28 March, with substantial discounts available for pre-purchased tickets. They will be available from Dumfries and Galloway Council customer service centres, DG One (01387-243550, www.dgone.co.uk) and from ticketweb (08444 771000, www.ticketweb.co.uk).

John Alexander, Project Director for ScottishPower Renewables said, “Supporting the British Pipe Band Championships for a 2nd year was an easy decision for us and we are already looking forward to the 30th June.

“We are proud of the work that we do in Dumfries and Galloway and it is important that we can support community initiatives wherever possible. We are delighted to be sponsoring the British Pipe Band Championships and we hope that as many people as possible turn out to watch the bands in action.”

Ewan Green, head of the Council’s Economic Development service said, “I am delighted that ScottishPower Renewables wish to continue their association with Dumfries and Galloway Council, to help us deliver the British Pipe Band championships in Annan. This is a productive sponsorship agreement that demonstrates the high profile of this national showcase for piping, and has contributed to the Council’s decision to keep ticket prices at their 2011 levels.”

Ian Embelton of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association said, ‘The RSPBA are pleased to work in partnership with the Council and ScottishPower Renewables to bring the British Pipe Band Championships – one of our ‘majors’, back to Dumfries and Galloway for a third successive year. We intend to make this the biggest and best Annan Championships yet.”
