Run the Blades is back!

04/06/2024

Run the Blades is back and it’s bigger and better than ever before. Held exclusively within ScottishPower Renewables’ Whitelee windfarm, just a 20 minute drive from the centre of Glasgow, it has grown to become one of the largest trail running events in the UK.

Hosted at the UK’s largest onshore windfarm, this unique event is back for its ninth year and takes place from Friday 19th July through to Sunday 21st July and incorporates four distances; a 10k run, a half marathon, a 50k ultramarathon and the free-to-enter 1 mile Junior Run the Blades. The event makes trail running accessible to runners of all fitness and experience levels.

Lee Peyton, Founder of Breaking Strain, which runs the event, said:  “Run the Blades has grown year-on-year following the pandemic. We weren’t sure how it would bounce back, but thanks to our sponsors ScottishPower Renewables and the huge numbers of runners that take part we are back and we are bigger and better than ever.

“It is a unique event and it’s great to see the camaraderie between the participants and the support they give to each other.”

Joe Mitchell, SPR’s Head of Operations and Maintenance, said:  “We’re really proud to be hosting Run the Blades – a hugely successful annual event -  for the 9th year. Whitelee Windfarm is the largest in the UK and, as well as generating enough green energy to power the equivalent of 350,000 homes, it offers a much-loved green space for everyone.

“Since opening in 2009, we’ve already welcomed almost one million visitors - from runners and dog walkers to cyclists and horse riders. Supporting the event is a great way to celebrate our role within the local community.”

This is no normal road run or trail run. You’ll be running amongst the turbines with stunning views across the landscape –  a truly unique setting. The route has robust route signage as well as friendly marshals and support teams on hand to assist if needed. When you finish you will receive your event medal and goody bag and get to enjoy entertainment in the vibrant event village.
