WEW: Speeding up offshore wind projects

30/06/2023

Our Offshore MD, Gillian Noble, talks during Wind Energy Week about the importance of making the development of green projects quicker and easier.

As we celebrate Wind Energy Week, it’s a perfect chance to reiterate the importance of this green form of energy and call for the changes needed to reach a net zero future.

Wind power is at the core of a net-zero UK, and ScottishPower Renewables is at the forefront in delivering hugely important projects.

The path to get to net zero by growing our green, homegrown energy and moving away from reliance on fossil fuels is filled with ambitious targets. However, to hit those targets, the UK must make significant changes quickly.

From a developer perspective, we’re ready to play our part. Across ScottishPower Renewables, we’re investing almost £3 billion between now and 2025 to increase offshore wind, onshore wind, and solar generation. We also have a record pipeline of renewables projects, including our first floating wind projects and, of course, our East Anglia Hub.

But we need to make it easier and quicker to get to work on green projects like these.

That means ensuring we have a planning system that supports the development of projects alongside appropriate scrutiny; a clearer approach to CfD auctions that ensures developers know what’s coming down the line; and speeding up the delivery and planning of grid infrastructure so the green electricity we produce can get where it needs to go.

It isn’t rocket science – it just needs commitment, clarity and collaboration.

If we treat the climate emergency with the urgency and importance it deserves, I have no doubt we will enjoy cleaner and greener lives, stay on course for 2050 and reap the benefits of a net zero future.
