Here’s the perfect answer for anyone puzzling over how to celebrate Father’s Day later this month.

Take a trip out to Coldham Windfarm for the Energy Works Fun Day on June 21. There will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy – and they’ll all learn a lot along the way.

The event is being organised by Fenland District Council in conjunction with the Co-operative, ScottishPower Renewables and the Cambridgeshire Environmental Education Service (CEES). Kicking off at 10.30am, it will give Fenlanders a chance to find out how a modern farm works and gain some valuable tips on ways to save energy and help the environment.

Entrance is free and visitors will be able to take part in a wide range of activities, including:

• Getting a close-up view of Coldham Windfarm’s eight wind turbines and learning more about this eco-friendly way of generating energy.
• Learning how our food is produced through the Co-operative Farms’ “From Farm to Fork” educational programme
• Discovering various ways to save energy – and cash – in the home
• Joining in various hands-on activities for children on recycling and renewable energy, including building their own model turbines

Refreshments on offer will include a hog roast and fresh, home-grown strawberries.

Councillor Peter Murphy, portfolio holder with responsibility for the environment, said: “So often we take our food and electricity for granted. This is a great opportunity to learn about where they come from and how we can all do our bit to help tackle climate change, which is probably the most serious problem facing the world today.”

Rob Ellis, the Co-operative’s sustainable development manager, said: “Coldham Farm is an example of modern farming at its best, making use of the most up-to-date and energy-efficient technology. Last year’s fun day was a huge success, attracting more than 300 people, and we’re delighted to be involved in it again this time.”

Martin Mathers, of ScottishPower Renewables, said: “Why not do something different for Father’s Day this year - and at the same time learn more about windfarms, renewable energy and how you can make a difference to the environment?”

The Energy Works project was set up as a partnership between Fenland District Council, the Co-operative, ScottishPower Renewables and CEES 18 months ago. It provides schools with balanced teaching across the whole curriculum about climate change and renewable energy. It is based at Coldham Farm.

The day comes at the end of Wind Week, organised by the British Wind Energy Association to highlight the benefits of wind power.
