Every secondary school in Scotland is set to benefit from a new renewable energy education pack created by ScottishPower Renewables (SPR).
Designed in conjunction with teachers, the unique pack has been nearly two years in the making and offers a genuine insight into renewable energy.
Split into two discs, the resource has an interactive DVD detailing how renewable energy works, the process of building a windfarm, electrical safety and energy conservation.
The second disc provides teachers with lesson plans, practical exercises and fun informative games, all designed to highlight the growing role that renewables has to play in all our energy needs now and in the future.
Keith Anderson, Director, ScottishPower Renewables said: “We are always receiving requests from schools throughout Scotland all eager to find out more about renewables and it was from these enquires that we realised that an education pack would be of great benefit.
“We worked with a number of educational professionals to ensure the pack will be of use to teachers and we have already received extremely positive feedback on its content.
“The renewable energy industry is growing rapidly, and with the Scottish Government aiming to generate 50% of the country’s electricity demand from renewables by 2020, this expansion is set to continue. As well as learning about the fundamentals, hopefully it will also inspire some of the children to think about renewable energy as a potential career choice.
Neil Henderson is a Science Teacher at Boclair Academy in Bearsden and he has already made full use of the education pack: “There is a genuine interest to learn about renewables and this pack makes it easier for teachers and pupils.
“The worksheets and the interactive DVD are well put together and work well across a number of age groups. It also helps that this pack is based on an actual Scottish windfarm that pupils can visit and that makes electrical generation through renewables more real”
The pack has already been sent to every secondary school in the country, with the teacher support pack also downloadable from www.scottispowerrenewables.com.
