Thurso proved once again what a world class surf break is all about, the UK Pro Surf tours massive seven day Surf festival coincided with a huge swell on Saturday 26th delivering 12ft at Thurso East and 6ft at The Pipe.
The UK Pro Surf has firmly established this event as regular on the tour calendar and Thurso continues to show why surfers are prepared to travel for days to get the ultimate surf experience.
The conditions delivered an epic weekend of surfing as the UK’s best surfers battled to win the UK Pro Surf title.
The Festival hosted a number of live music acts, onsite DJ and Skate and BMX Park for the locals to enjoy but the real action happened at the harbour car park as the pumping swell kept on delivering huge waves for the watching public to enjoy.
There was some sensational performances with Paddy Daniels scoring a perfect 10 wave which is the first of the Pro Surf Tour this year, Jobe Harriss continued his impressive season in the U18 boys division and Evie Johnson won the Women’s event.
The Relentless Super Series was won by Reubyn Ash and Stuart Campbell was second who with this placing now leads the UK Pro Surf Open Division with two events remaining.
A huge thanks to our sponsors making this event happen, ScottishPower Renewables, Event Scotland, Highlands Council and Relentless.
Dave Reed, UK Pro Surf, said “The British Tour would not be complete without coming to Thurso the surfers love this break and a big thanks to everyone for supporting the event, we look forward to seeing you all next year.”
Andy Bain, local Thurso surfer, said "Having the UK Pro Surf tour coming to Thurso each year with its open and juniors divisions is a great event for the town and developing Scottish junior surfing.
I think the local people now realise for sure that Thurso has some quality waves. The event has been a good opportunity for Scottish surfers at a competing level to enter the event, especially for the juniors who otherwise would have to travel to Cornwall to compete at such a level."
Organisers would like to thank the Scottish Surfing Federation and local surfers for sharing their Surf Break at Thurso with the travelling surfers during the week’s event.
John Alexander, Project Director at ScottishPower Renewables hosted the prize giving, and said, “We at ScottishPower Renewables are delighted to have supported this fantastic event. We want to engage with the communities in which we work and raise awareness of the opportunities arising from harnessing the power of the wind, the tides and of course the waves. Caithness has huge potential to reap economic benefits from all these resources, and ScottishPower Renewables is at the forefront of development activity in support of this.”
