4,000 visitors attend ScottishPower Renewables' Whitelee Community Day
More than four thousand visitors flocked to our Whitelee Community Day for an action-packed event at the UK’s largest onshore windfarm.
Visitors were able to explore the windfarm and learn more about the turbines from our Operations and Maintenance Team, who shared their expertise and experience of what it’s like to run a windfarm like Whitelee.
Joe Mitchell, our Operations and Maintenance Director, said: “Our Community Day is a fantastic way to connect with the public and showcase everything Whitelee has to offer. It’s much more than a windfarm and we’re thrilled to see such a strong turnout and enthusiastic support for this popular event at our much-loved site, which generates enough clean energy to power the equivalent of more than 350,000 homes.”
As well as learning about renewable energy generation from the team, guests enjoyed interactive exhibits from Glasgow Science Centre, tried their hand at piping and drumming with the ScottishPower Pipe Band and visited the animal petting zoo.
Our in-house Ecologists were also on hand to share more about the work done on the site to protect and promote biodiversity – introducing some of the species living there. Budding nature enthusiasts were taken on a mini adventure to see some of their habitats.
The annual event not only allows visitors the opportunity to explore the 130km of trails open all year round to walkers, cyclists, runners and horse riders alike, but to engage with a number of exhibitors – many of whom return year on year to encourage future generations to consider careers in STEM, or to look after the local environment and each other.
With support from organisations like WWF, Cancer Research UK, Scottish Wildlife Trust, SSPCA, local police and fantastic independent food vendors, the event offered something for all the family and was once again a huge success.
